本プロジェクトは、カリフォルニア・ニューポートビーチを拠点とするDAYDREAM SURF SHOP LLCオーナー、素敵なご夫婦でもある、Kyle(カイル)、Becca(ベッカ)と共に立ち上げられました。 サーフカルチャーやライフスタイルを軸に活動する同チームの背景のもと、ワインを通じてカリフォルニアの文化や自然、そして造り手のストーリーを日本へ届けていきます。 ■Poppy Wineのミッション Poppy Wineは、ストーリーを中心に据えたワインプロジェクトです。 カリフォルニアのナチュラルワインを通じて、その土地の文化や自然環境、そして造り手の哲学を日本へ届けることを目的としています。 私たちが取り扱うのは、小規模で誠実なワインメーカーたちによるワインです。 彼らは小さな畑でブドウを栽培し、小ロットで醸造を行い、それぞれの土地の個性や自然環境をそのままワインとして表現しています。 これらの生産者のストーリーをより深く伝えるため、映像や写真によるアーカイブ制作にも取り組んでいきます。 また、現地のワイナリーを訪問し、各生産者をケーススタディとして記録していくプロジェクトも進行中です。 ■Poppy Wine立ち上げの背景 Poppy Wineの原点は、KyleとBeccaが営む、 カリフォルニア・オレンジカウンティで運営しているワインバー「Semi Tropic Wines」にあります。 当時、地域内でナチュラルワインを取り扱う場所は非常に少なく、その状況を変えたいという想いから同店はスタートしました。 結果としてSemi Tropic Winesは、同エリアにおいてナチュラルワインのみを扱う先駆的なワインバーとなりました。 店舗運営を通じて、フランス、イタリア、東ヨーロッパ、オーストラリア、南米、そしてカリフォルニアなど、世界各地のナチュラルワインに触れる中で、ある共通点に気づきます。 それは、パリ、シドニー、ロサンゼルス、ニューヨーク、東京といった世界の主要都市において、似た銘柄のナチュラルワインが広く流通している一方で、カリフォルニアのナチュラルワインは日本ではほとんど紹介されていないという点でした。 このギャップこそが、Poppy Wineを立ち上げるきっかけとなっています。 ■ナチュラルワインに対する考え方 Poppy Wineでは、ナチュラルワインは「過去・現在・未来」をつなぐ存在であると捉えています。 ワインは本来、長い歴史の中で自然な手法によって造られてきました。 しかし近年では、大量生産を前提とした工業的なワイン造りも一般化しています。 ナチュラルワインは、土地や気候、その年の環境をそのまま映し出す“スナップショット”のような存在です。 土壌や空気、周囲の自然環境の影響を受けたブドウが、最小限の介入によって発酵し、ワインへと変化していきます。 その結果生まれるのは、純粋でありながら個性、表現豊かなワイン達です。 ■カリフォルニア・ナチュラルワインの特徴 カリフォルニアのナチュラルワインは、広大な土地と多様な気候、そして造り手の創造性によって形作られます。 SonomaやHumboldt、Sierra Foothills、Southern Californiaなど、それぞれの地域が異なる個性を持ち、土壌や気候、栽培品種の違いがワインに大きく影響します。 中でもSonomaは、低介入のワインメーカーが集まる注目の地域であり、海の影響を受けた気候と豊かな土壌により、バランスの取れたブドウが育まれています。 一般的にカリフォルニアワインには、濃厚で樽の効いたスタイルのイメージもありますが、ナチュラルワインはそれとは異なり、より自由で多様な表現を持っています。 Poppy Wineが考えるカリフォルニア・ナチュラルワインの魅力は、 ・若々しさ ・フレッシュさ ・エネルギー ・バランス ・クリーンさ ・生き生きとした印象 といった要素にあります。 ■店舗概要 店舗は東京都世田谷区下馬1丁目に位置し、三軒茶屋や学芸大学、祐天寺といったカルチャーの集まるエリアに囲まれた場所にあります。 ・ GRAND OPEN : 7/31 (金) ※現在レセプション期間中 月 : close 火-土 : 15:00-24:00 日 : 13:00-22:00 日中はスーベニアショップとしてカリフォルニアのカルチャーを感じられるアイテムを展開し、夜は軽食とともにナチュラルワインを楽しめるワインバーとして営業します。 Poppy Wineでは、カリフォルニアの小規模ワインメーカーとの関係性を大切にしながら選ばれたワインを中心に取り扱い、その背景にあるストーリーとともに提供していきます。 〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️ This project was founded together with Kyle and Becca, the owners of DAYDREAM SURF SHOP LLC based in Newport Beach, California. Inspired by their deep roots in surf culture and the California lifestyle, POPPY WINE was created to share the culture, landscapes, and stories behind California wine with Japan. Our Mission POPPY WINE is a wine project built around storytelling. Through California natural wine, we aim to introduce Japan to the culture, landscapes, and philosophies of the people who make these wines. We carefully select wines from small, independent producers who cultivate their vineyards with integrity and craft wines in small batches. Each bottle reflects the unique characteristics of its vineyard, climate, and surrounding environment. To preserve and share these stories more deeply, we are also creating photo and film archives documenting the people, vineyards, and places behind each wine. In addition, we are currently developing an ongoing documentary project, visiting wineries throughout California and documenting each producer as an individual case study. Why POPPY WINE Exists The idea for POPPY WINE began at Semi Tropic Wines, the wine bar owned by Kyle and Becca in Orange County, California. When they first opened, there were very few places in the area dedicated to natural wine. They wanted to change that. Semi Tropic Wines eventually became one of the pioneering wine bars in Orange County focused exclusively on natural wine. As they explored wines from France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Australia, South America, and California, they noticed something interesting. Cities like Paris, Sydney, Los Angeles, New York, and Tokyo all shared many of the same natural wine labels. California, however—despite being one of the world's most important wine regions—remained largely absent from the Japanese natural wine scene. That gap became the inspiration behind POPPY WINE. Our Perspective on Natural Wine At POPPY WINE, we see natural wine as something that connects the past, present, and future. For centuries, wine was made naturally, with minimal intervention. While modern industrial winemaking has become increasingly common, natural wine continues to express something far more personal. Each vintage captures a moment in time—a snapshot of the vineyard. The grapes are shaped by their soil, surrounding plants, ocean air, weather, and climate before being transformed into wine through minimal intervention. The result is wine that is pure, expressive, vibrant, and full of individuality. California Natural Wine California's natural wines are shaped by vast landscapes, diverse climates, and remarkably creative winemakers. Regions such as Sonoma, Humboldt, Sierra Foothills, and Southern California each possess distinct personalities, with differences in climate, soil, and grape varieties reflected in every bottle. Among them, Sonoma has become one of the leading regions for low-intervention winemaking, benefiting from coastal influences and exceptionally diverse soils. While California is often associated with bold, heavily oaked wines, its natural wine movement tells a very different story. For us, California natural wine represents: Youthfulness Freshness Energy Balance Purity Vibrancy These qualities define the wines we hope to introduce to Japan. In the evening, it transforms into a neighborhood wine bar serving natural wines alongside seasonal small plates. Our wine selection focuses on independent California producers whose wines reflect not only exceptional craftsmanship, but also the stories, people, and places behind every bottle.
